I just noticed you had posted a response to a comment I made about McCain's addiction. The questions you have are pretty common to people who have never been addicted to anything. It's "normal" to feel dizzy or weird or somehow undesirable on most drugs/alcohol and not want to get any higher/drunker, but addicts get that feeling and chase it to their demise. The whole idea of who is an addict and who is just a heavy user is when a person faces grave consequences because of their use and continues to use anyway. I have read (and learned from speakers in rehab) how addicts are actually physiologically different than non-addicts. There is an interesting chemical breakdown of acohol that eventually leads to its elimination that, in alcoholics, takes a different chemical path. There have also been studies on sons of typeI alcoholic fathers that show a particular protein exists in their blood that most people don't have. It's a mysterious affliction to be sure and I don't think anyone really knows why it happens which is why 12 step programs address the need for a spiritual (not religious) remedy. The crazy thing is that the only way I stay sober is to talk to other addicts. At any rate, sorry for babbling and if you have any questions please ask. I know people get uncomfortable talking about it sometimes but I am entirely open and only hope that somehow I can help someone understand what it's like.
One other thing, after writing this I realize that I should have picked a different user name. I deluded myself when I was using that it was all so I could write a really great book. All I had was what I thought was a clever title: "He Scores, He Shoots" (scores dope, shoots dope). I guess I can think of it as a reminder of how stupid I was acting. Yeesh, sorry, I'm babbling again.

actually, the mystical negro thing is a concept developed in media studies about similarly racist depictions of black people as martyrs who sacrifice themselves for a white person unnecessarily. see: the green mile, the legend of bagger vance, sex and the city, et al. she was just using the academically-accepted term for it.

hey- I wasn't disagreeing with you about the black male complaint thing- just pointing out an irony for me. I think the real issue is with all men regardless of race and I think you hit it right on the head.
Now as far as the "badgering" term- I wouldn't really use that about myself- it was kind of in context of how he reacted to me.
But you are right, I should have used a different word.
